प्राचीन महाभैरव मंदिर असम के तेजपुर शहर के उत्तरी भाग पर एक पहाड़ी पर स्थित है। माना जाता है कि इस मंदिर की स्थापना राजा बाना ने पूर्व ऐतिहासिक काल में की थी। यह शिव मंदिर मूल रूप से पत्थर का निर्माण किया गया था लेकिन वर्तमान का जीर्णोद्धार किया गया था और कंक्रीट के साथ बनाया गया था। अहोम शासन के दौरान, विशेष रूप से तुंगखुंगिया राजवंश के राजाओं ने मंदिर को देवोतर भूमि के बड़े क्षेत्र को दान कर दिया और मंदिर की देखभाल के लिए पुजारी और पाइक नियुक्त किए गए थे। प्रबंधन की जिम्मेदारी एक बोरठाकुर के हाथ में थी। अब इस मंदिर का प्रबंधन सरकार द्वारा जिला उपायुक्त की अध्यक्षता वाली प्रबंध समिति के माध्यम से किया जाता है। मंदिर में शिवरात्रि को बड़े उत्सव के साथ मनाया जाता है और देश भर से लोग इसे देखने आते हैं। शिवरात्रि सप्ताह के दौरान शिवरात्रि मेला (कार्निवाल) पूरे असम में काफी प्रसिद्ध है। भांग (एक भारतीय औषधि) लड्डू, प्रसाद के रूप में बेचा जाता है (प्रभु का प्रसाद) बहुत अधिक मांग में हैं। यह मेला शिवसागर की तुलना में छोटा है, लेकिन फिर भी प्रसिद्ध है। यह मंदिर विवाह समारोह भी आयोजित करता है। आमतौर पर लोग इस मंदिर में कबूतरों को प्रसाद के रूप में मुक्त करते हैं, इस जगह पर सैकड़ों कबूतर देखने को मिलते हैं यह अद्भुत नजारा है।

Shivratri mela (Carnival) during the week of Shivratri is very popular all over Assam. Laddoos from Bhang (Indian medicine), which is sold as prasad (Lord's Offerings) is highly sought after. Miles smaller than Sivsagar, but it is famous. This temple also performs the marriage ceremony. People often shoot pigeons in this temple as a show, it's a great sight to see hundreds of pigeons here.
